Sushi & Mecury

Adina is back to answer your questions about healthy sushi consumption.

- How much sushi can I eat before I get mercury poisoning? – Devin N.

The jury is still sort of out on this one. A few years ago, people thought that maybe if you were eating fish every single day you should be concerned. But now, some experts recommend that we all cut way back. It’s better to avoid certain types of fish, rather than all of them. Skip shark, marlin, tilefish, mackerel king, swordfish, and don’t overdo it with tuna. But the truth is that the risk is really low with most other fish, and mercury is everywhere, not just in fish. It’s much more important to get enough Omegas, so cutting back too much can have worse consequences (unless you’re very careful to supplement your diet with healthy oils, nuts, flax, and hemp). New studies even show that women who cut back too much while they’re pregnant may be negatively affecting their babies’ health. So, maybe don’t be a Jeremy Piven (who may have started this whole mess in the first place by claiming he got mercury poisoning from eating six servings of sushi per week), but otherwise don’t worry too much. Choose your fish wisely, and if possible, choose sustainable fisheries or restaurants that support them. And supplement your diet with vegetarian sources of Omegas no matter what, since you need the healthy oils every day.
