My garden project was a slight debacle this year. The seedlings I had planted in February ended up drowning due to an oversight on my part: I didn’t realize that there was a tray under the cells that collected water. The soil couldn’t drain properly, so I ended up rotting the seedling roots. As soon as I realized this was happening, I only had time to salvage the rosemary, sage & basil. I ended up with an herb garden instead of a veggie garden. But, it turned out okay because we purchased a CSA share from our local farm, Langwater Farm, which has supplied us with delicious produce since mid-May. It’s the next best thing to having your own garden.
In sum, this was a great first year experience. I learned a ton. Next year I’ll order seeds in January, plant inside again, and get the beds built early in the spring. I’ll definitely want to supplement our CSA share with lettuces, mixed greens, tomatoes and herbs.
